Local DirecTV contractor to lay off employees
Business First of Columbus - Business First
A local contractor for DirecTV Group Inc. is laying off as many as 50 employees after the satellite provider unexpectedly reduced its work order.
JBM Inc., which does business in Columbus as Bluegrass Satellite, filed a notice with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services indicating 50 or more employees could be laid off for an indeterminate amount of time. The company said DirecTV (NASDAQ:DTV), its only customer, informed JBM it was taking some contracted work it had been performing and assigning it to other companies.
JBM said all employees, represented by the United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America union, have been notified. The company's office is at 1348 Stimmel Road on Columbus' southwest side.
A local company representative declined to comment on the layoffs until union talks wrapped.
JBM's parent company is DirecTech, whose four branches service companies including DirecTV, home security provider ADT and Internet service provider WildBlue. DirecTech has about 2,000 employees company-wide and more than 30 warehouses and offices nationwide. The company has five facilities in Ohio, including JBM's Columbus location.
