Work starts on $232M KCI Intermodal BusinessCentre

Kansas City Business Journal

Construction started Tuesday on the KCI Intermodal BusinessCentre at Kansas City International Airport.

The 800-acre, multiuse development is on the southeast corner of KCI’s airfield. The project will cost $232 million, Kansas City Aviation Department spokesman Joe McBride said.

Dallas-based Trammell Crow Co. is the developer.

The project’s first phase, scheduled for completion by the summer, includes roads and utilities on a 180-acre parcel south of the American Airlines overhaul base and fronting Prairie View Road and Interstate 29 on the east edge of airport property, Trammell Crow said in a release. It will have four buildings containing about 1.8 million square feet of commercial space combined, one of the nation’s largest Foreign Trade Zones and easy access to four interstates, the release said.

“KCI Intermodal BusinessCentre is putting itself in a position to take advantage of Kansas City’s growing presence as a Midwest distribution hub,” Steven Bradford, managing director of Trammell Crow, said in the release.

Mark VanLoh, director of the Kansas City Aviation Department, said in the release that the city is committed to transforming KCI into a “major center for manufacturing, intermodal shipping and commercial development.”

The partnership will help leverage KCI’s strategic location to attract jobs and industry, he said in the release.

Plans call for the project’s second phase to include an extension of roads and utilities to about 200 contiguous acres, which have more than 4,000 linear feet of frontage along KCI’s main runways.

Long-term plans include mixed-use commercial, retail and other development along Tiffany Springs Road, which will be extended west from Interstate 29.
