Missouri, Kansas unemployment improves

Kansas City Business Journal

Missouri’s unemployment rate was 6.1 percent in October, down from 6.2 percent in September but up from 5.1 percent in October 2007, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday.

Missouri had the second-largest month-to-month increase in the number of newly employed people in the nation in October, at 5,300, the agency said in a release.

Kansas had a 4.5 percent unemployment rate in October, down from 4.8 percent in September but up from 3.6 percent in October 2007.

All the figures are not seasonally adjusted.

U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., issued a release Thursday lauding the Senate’s passage of a bill to increase unemployment benefits for an additional seven weeks for those who lost their jobs and already exhausted their benefits.

“As we approach the holiday season with a weak economy, too many Missouri families are going to find themselves in a financial crunch,” McCaskill said in Thursday’s release. “This funding will help those hurting most by the economic downturn keep their heads above water, and I’m glad to say we got it done before Congress goes home for the holiday.”

The House already passed a version of the bill, so the legislation goes to President Bush.
