Layoffs rise in Missouri, Kansas

Missouri had 35 layoffs of at least 50 workers and 5,877 initial claims for unemployment insurance in October, according to statistics the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released Friday.

The state had 18 mass layoffs and 1,196 claims in September, and 16 mass layoffs and 3,165 claims in October 2007, the bureau said in a release.

Kansas had 18 mass layoffs and 2,543 initial claims in October, compared with six layoffs and 478 claims in September, and three layoffs and 347 claims in October 2007.

The nation had 2,125 mass layoffs and 221,784 initial claims for unemployment insurance in October, up from 1,292 layoffs and 129,586 claims in September, and 1,083 layoffs and 108,455 claims in October 2007.

Nationally, the manufacturing sector accounted for 32 percent of all mass layoffs and 45 percent of initial claims filed in October.
