Philip Morris Inc. will phase out cigarette production in Louisville, eliminating 1,400 jobs. The production will be moved to the company's manufacturing facilities in Richmond, Va., and Cabarrus, N.C. The Louisville plant will be shut down beginning this year and ending no later than December 2000. The company will give employees severance packages that include as much as 18 months of wages and benefits. Employees will be provided with outplacement services. The company will keep open its stem, paper processing and leaf warehouse facilities in Louisville.
