City to furlough workers for three days
Business First of Louisville
In a move that will save about $2 million in personnel costs, Louisville-Jefferson County Metro Government will close its offices and place all nonessential employees on unpaid furlough for three days.
Also, Louisville Metro Mayor Jerry Abramson and the city’s top leadership team will take a 10 percent pay cut starting Jan. 1, 2009. This will save about $200,000 this year.
These steps are the latest attempt to address a projected $20 million city budget shortfall, according to a news release.
Earlier this week, Abramson announced a hiring freeze and restrictions on travel and discretionary spending to help balance the budget.
City workers will be furloughed on Friday, Dec. 26; Friday, Jan. 2; and Friday, May 1, which is Kentucky Oaks Day. City employees have paid holidays on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Public safety agencies — including essential personnel in police, fire, EMS and corrections — and garbage collection crews will be staffed as usual. All other departments will be closed.
“These are three days that will have the least impact on both citizens and employees,” Abramson said in the release.
The furlough will involve about 4,500 of the city’s 6,000 employees. Because government will be closed, employees will not be allowed to use vacation or personal time for these days, according to the release.
Abramson said that employee layoffs are among the options still being considered to balance the budget. More spending restrictions will be determined in the next few weeks, according to the release.
