Delta mulling more flight cuts

Business First of Louisville

Delta Air Lines Inc. told investors in a regulatory filing Friday that its system capacity will be down 4 percent for the fourth quarter and said it is taking a look at cutting capacity next year in light of lower demand.

The Atlanta-based airline in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing said its fourth-quarter domestic capacity will be down 12 percent, while international capacity will show 9 percent growth. The company said that demand has slowed over the course of the quarter, with domestic advance bookings 2 percentage points higher year-over year, reflecting previous capacity cuts. International bookings, the airline said, are down 4 to 5 percentage points.

“As a result, we are evaluating our capacity plans for 2009 on both the domestic and international system and expect to reduce future capacity to better align supply with current levels of demand,” the company said.

Delta for months has said it would cut its domestic capacity while boosting more lucrative international routes. The company plans to release more information on Dec. 9.

Delta (NYSE: DAL), which recently acquired Eagan, Minn.-based Northwest Airlines Corp., operates a hub at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in Hebron, Ky., and is among the largest carriers at Louisville International Airport.
