Former Chief Justice assistant joins Memphis firm

Memphis Business Journal

James C. Duff, former administrative assistant to Chief Justice William Rehnquist, has joined the Memphis-based law firm of Baker, Donelson, Bearman & Caldwell as a shareholder and will work in the firm's Washington, D.C., office.

Duff served four years at the U.S. Supreme Court as administrative assistant to Rehnquist, assisting him with his duties as chief of staff and senior manager of the court. This included work on the presidential impeachment trial, the Judicial Conference, the Federal Judicial Board and the Smithsonian Institution.

Before serving with the Supreme Court, Duff was a partner at Clifford & Warnke, and later with Howrey & Simon in Washington, D.C., where he concentrated on antitrust and commercial litigation, international trade and legislative matters. In his new role with Baker Donelson, Duff will work in the public policy arena with former Senate majority leader and White House chief of staff Howard Baker, as well as practice international trade, white collar crime and antitrust law.

Duff is also a member of the adjunct faculty of Georgetown University where he teaches Constitutional Law, and a former adjunct instructor at the Brookings Institution. He received his bachelor's from the honors program at the University of Kentucky in 1975 and his juris doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center in 1981.

In addition to his role with Baker Donelson, Duff is the secretary designate of the Freedom Forum and the First Amendment Center, an Arlington, Va.-based international foundation with offices at Vanderbilt University, New York City, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong, Johannesburg and London.

Baker, Donelson, Bearman & Caldwell is a full-service law firm representing regional, national and international clients. More than 240 attorneys and senior public policy advisors serve clients from offices in Washington, D.C., Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Tri-Cities Tenn./Va. and Huntsville, Tenn., as well as Jackson, Miss.
