YRC to lay off 15% of work force

Memphis Business Journal

YRC Worldwide Inc. will lay off about 3,750 drivers and dockworkers as it merges its Yellow Transportation and Roadway carriers, a 15 percent reduction in its 25,000 employees, a company spokeswoman said Wednesday.

YRC subsidiaries Yellow Transportation and Roadway Express Inc. are the two largest less-than-truckload carriers in Memphis.

Combined, the two companies employ more than 1,700 people and operate almost 500 trucks and more than 1,500 trailers in Memphis alone.

The company did not name specific locations where employee reductions would take place.

Overland Park, Kan.-based YRC (Nasdaq: YRCW) said Sept. 8 that it was speeding up the integration of Yellow Transportation and Roadway.

On Oct. 23, the company reported lower third quarter earnings and revenue compared with last year as the economic slowdown continued to take a toll.
