Unemployment Act passes Senate granting extended benefits for Tennesseans

Memphis Business Journal

The Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2008 passed the U.S. Senate by a vote of 89-6, after passing the House of Representatives last month.

Sen. Lamar Alexander voted in favor of the bill, citing Tennessee’s 7.2 percent unemployment rate, the seventh highest in the country.

The state's Department of Labor & Workforce Development released October's unemployment rate numbers Thursday, which showed a decline from September's 7.2 percent rate to 7 percent. October's rate is still two percentage points higher than October 2007.

“Right now, Tennessee is suffering from the highest unemployment rate we’ve had since 1987,” Alexander said in a statement. “This measure could provide up to 13 additional weeks of unemployment benefits to workers in Tennessee who have lost their jobs for reasons outside of their control, giving them more time to find new jobs during this tough economic time.”
