Methodist laying off 99 employees

Memphis Business Journal

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare Inc. is laying off 99 employees in “unprecedented times.”

A statement by CEO Gary Shorb issued late Thursday claims the hospital system is placing many of the displaced workers into other positions in the organization. Shorb claims the poor state of the global economy impacted the system’s investments and the layoffs are also related to the impacts of low Medicare and TennCare reimbursement rates.

“Methodist is financially stable, but as good stewards of our resources, we are obligated to carefully and thoughtfully review ways to operate more efficiently, and it is always our goal to minimize the impact on our associates,” Shorb said. “This is a very difficult decision, made only after a very thorough analysis and consideration of other options.”
