Wall Street surges back Friday, Dow up nearly 500 points

Following the positive results on Wall Street, the arrow turned up for most of the Memphis-based public companies Friday.

Shares of 10 of the 14 Memphis public companies ended the day up, led by Mid-America Apartment Communities Inc. (NYSE: MAA) which finished up 9.19 percent, or $2.21, to close at $26.25.

Other notable gains were made by Mueller Industries Inc. (NYSE: MLI), which finished up 8.71 percent to close at $17.72 and FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) up 7.33 percent to close at $60.91 a share.

The leading decliner of the day was Verso Paper Corp. (NYSE: VRS) which ended the day down 8.82 percent to close at 93 cents, another 52-week low.

All the major indexes ended the day up. The Dow Jones ended Friday up 6.54 percent, or 494.13 points, to close at 8,046.42; the Nasdaq was up 68.23 to close at 1,384.35 and the S&P closed at 800.03, up 47.59.
