Rhodes named among top study abroad institutions

Memphis Business Journal

Rhodes College has been named among the nation's top baccalaureate institutions for study abroad, according to a report released by the Institute of International Education.

Rhodes achieved rankings in three categories: 12th for percentage of undergraduate participation; 20th for sending students abroad for a short-term duration; and 40th for total numbers of study abroad students. The school ranked 18th last year for percentage of undergraduate participation. 271 Rhodes students participated in study abroad programs last year.

Austin College in Texas ranked first on the list of undergraduate participation. Rhodes ranked ahead of Washington and Lee University, Macalester College, Davidson College, Middlebury College and Pomona College.

Katherine Owen Richardson, director of international programs at Rhodes, said the school has made studying abroad a priority for the last 40 years.

“We want students to engage in opportunities that complement and supplement their education at 2000 North Parkway,” Richardson said in a statement.

Rhodes president William Troutt has served on the Abraham Lincoln Study Abroad Fellowship Commission, which recommends expanding opportunities for American college students to study abroad.

“As the Lincoln Commission report states, 'For their own future and that of the nation, college graduates today must be internationally competent,'" Troutt said in a statement. “Local economies are no longer local. It is increasingly difficult to identify American companies or organizations that don't rely on some type of international relationship. One in six American jobs is now tied to international trade.”

The Institute of International Education has published the Open Doors report since 1949, receiving support from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. State Department.
