Wisconsin ranks near the middle of the 50 U.S. states when it comes to attracting and keeping businesses while providing high standards of living for workers, according to a report released Wednesday morning.
The eighth annual state competitiveness report from the Beacon Hill Institute placed Wisconsin 20th on its list. The Boston-based institute put Massachusetts in first place. Last place went to Mississippi.
Researchers preparing the study evaluated the states in categories such as security, government and fiscal policy, environmental policy, human resources, technology and “business incubation.”
Wisconsin's strongest categories were human resources (10th), security (11th) and environmental policy (15th). Its weakest were business incubation (41st), government and fiscal policy (37th) and openness (32nd).
