UPAF allocates $8.3M for the arts

The Business Journal of Milwaukee

The United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF) of Milwaukee will distribute $8.3 million to its member arts groups and affiliates, up from $8.2 million last year, the organization announced at its annual meeting Thursday.

UPAF also made the unusual step of announcing its campaign co-chairs for both the 2009 and 2010 fundraising campaigns. Greater Milwaukee Committee president Julia Taylor, and Badger Meter Inc. chairman, president and CEO Richard Meeusen have been named co-chairs for the 2009 UPAF Campaign. Bev Greenberg, vice president public affairs at Time Warner Cable in Milwaukee, and Frank Martire, chairman, president and CEO of Metavante Corp. of Brown Deer, were named co-chairs for the 2010 UPAF Campaign.

UPAF raised a total of $10,500,022 in its 2008 campaign that ended in late June, falling short of a $10.6 million goal. The organization's officials blamed the shortfall on the economy and the loss of a single major corporate donor.

The allocations are for operating funds and are based on a formula implemented in 2004 that rates arts groups' stability, organizational performance, management and educational programs. Groups also are rewarded for their participation in, and support of, the annual UPAF fundraising campaign.

The largest allocation for 2008-2009 is $3,056,004 to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, which is down 1.5 percent compared with the $3,103,065 the symphony received last year. The Milwaukee Repertory Theater received the next largest allocation of $1,284,387, a 1.5 percent decline from the year before.

Allocations increased for 11 of UPAF's 16 member groups, which received a total of $8.1 million. Affiliate groups received a total of $174,351.

Management awards, presented under a program that started three years ago, were awarded to the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO), the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO), the Milwaukee Public Theatre and First Stage Children's Theater. MYSO and the MSO received two awards each.
