Hawaii Five-O to become a movie
Pacific Business News (Honolulu)
The Hollywood powerhouse DreamWorks has won exclusive negotiating rights to make a movie based on the TV series "Hawaii Five-O."
There was "a ferocious bidding war" among at least four parties, according to the Hollywood industry newspaper Variety.
The bidding was not just over the concept, but over a specific script already written by Roger Towne, who wrote the screenplay for "The Natural."
"Hawaii Five-O" ran on the CBS Television Network for a dozen seasons from 1968 to 1980. For longevity as a police series it beats "Hill Street Blues," "Kojak," "Law and Order," and even the venerable "Dragnet." It provided priceless promotion to Hawaii as a vacation destination, in part because of its unusual reliance on location shooting instead of Hollywood sets.
More than two decades after it left the air, Five-O reruns are a mainstay of cable, high school bands still perform the theme, the Internet is full of Five-O fan sites including at least two that offer plot synopses for every episode, and catch phrases such as "Book `em, Danno," and "Seal this rock," can still be heard in everyday speech.
Series star Jack Lord, who remained a Hawaii resident after the series ended, died in 1998.
