Hawaii Internet connections among slowest in the U.S.

Pacific Business News (Honolulu)

Hawaii Web surfers have slower Internet service than those in most states, according to PCMag.

According to a survey by the magazine, Hawaii Internet speeds are the 49th fastest in the nation, or the 2nd slowest, averaging 378 kilobytes per second.

“Hawaii is connected to the Internet via the same fast trunks as mainland America, but something is definitely holding its residents back,” PCMag noted.

The fastest state was Nevada with surf speeds averaging 781 Kbps. The slowest state was New Mexico at 322 Kbps. The national average was 557 Kbps.

To track surf speeds, PCMag used a custom-designed SurfSpeed application that grabs pages from several popular Web sites to measure actual Internet surfing speed and pored through data from more than 17,000 unique IP addresses.
