Hawaii improves in health rankings
Pacific Business News (Honolulu)
Hawaii has improved its health since a year ago.
Hawaii ranks 2nd in the country in terms of overall health of the population, according to the 2008 report from the Minnetonka, Minn.-based United Health Foundation. That’s up from third place from the 2007 report.
Hawaii’s strengths include a low prevalence of obesity, at 21.7 percent of the population; low levels of air pollution and a low rate of uninsured, at 8.2 percent.
Among the issues hampering Hawaii is a high prevalence of binge drinking, at 18.1 percent of the population.
The healthiest of the states is Vermont, with Hawaii, New Hampshire, Minnesota and Utah rounding out the top five.
South Carolina, Mississippi and Louisiana were the unhealthiest.
