Ed Case asks: Governor or Congress?
Pacific Business News (Honolulu) - by Chad Blair
Ed Case, a former Hawaii congressman and legislator, is asking supporters to tell him whether he should run for governor or the U.S. Congress in 2010.
In an e-mail sent Wednesday, Case wrote, “With your input, I want to complete my decision and reach out to Hawaii’s voters again with my candidacy.”
Case is a Democrat but he’s also courted Republicans since losing his bid for the U.S. Senate in 2006. Case’s e-mail doesn’t mention his party affiliation.
“I returned home from Congress in 2007 after over 12 full years in elective office,” Case wrote. “I’ve since enjoyed re-establishing my law career, teaching graduate school, contributing to our community, and just plain making up for lost time with my family and my Hawaii. But this time has convinced me that my own best contributions can be made in further elective office.”
Case said he supports the reelection in 2010 of Sen. Daniel Inouye, also a Democrat, but “will consider” seeking U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie’s 1st Congressional District seat should Abercrombie choose to run for governor.
Case, an attorney and former state legislator who represented the state’s rural 2nd Congressional District from 2002 until 2007, lost to Sen. Dan Akaka in the 2006 Democratic primary. Akaka was reelected in the general election.
Case also finished a close second to Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono in the 2002 primary race for governor.
Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona, a Republican, has already announced his intentions to run for governor. Another Republican, Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou, is running for the 1st Congressional seat, which represents most of Oahu, including Honolulu.
