Medical malpractice insurer says it's insolvent

Philadelphia Business Journal

PIC Insurance Group Inc., a Fort Washington medical malpractice insurer, filed a petition for insolvency in Commonwealth Court. A spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance said PIC, which wrote most of its policies for specialists in the Philadelphia area, stopped writing new policies on Jan. 1, 1996. On Dec. 1, 1997, the company informed its policyholders of its intent not to renew policies. PIC's action follows the collapse of PIE Mutual Insurance Co. of Ohio, which was also active in the Pennsylvania malpractice insurance market. PIE was placed in receivership in Ohio last month.
