Parents' verve helped drive his energy drink idea

Phoenix Business Journal - by Linda Obele Phoenix Business Journal

Asked about the source of his entrepreneurial drive, BK Boreyko answers without hesitation: "My parents."

"It was the way I was raised," said the founder of Vemma Nutrition Co., a Scottsdale-based liquid supplement company he formed three years ago with his siblings. "It was like Free Enterprise 101 all the time at my house."

Boreyko grew up in south Scottsdale, the son of network marketers who made their mark first with Amway Corp. and then as distributors for Matol Botanical International Ltd. They were earning more than $350,000 a month with Matol before they launched New Vision, their own health and wellness products company, in 1995.

Boreyko's earliest business training came as a grade-schooler working in the day-to-day operations of the Amway business. Later, he built his own direct-sales distributorships. Perhaps most important to his success, he believes, is the mentoring he received from his hard-working parents, both now deceased. He still frequently quotes his father.

"My dad used to say, 'If you love what you do, you won't work another day in your life,'" Boreyko said. "That's a big part of my entrepreneurial spirit."

So is coming up with new products.

Verve, a health-oriented energy drink Boreyko dreamed up after reading about the red-hot industry growth, has generated almost $3.5 million in sales in its first four months. It's the official energy drink of the Phoenix Suns and is available via select retail locations and the Internet.
