U.S. markets close up Wednesday for second straight day

The Dow added 172.60 points Wednesday, up 2.05 percent, to reach 8,591.69 points by closing. It marked the second straight day of modest gains and digests more of Monday’s massive, nearly 680-point loss.
Nasdaq gained 42.58 points or 2.94 percent to 1,492.38.
A cross-section of Pittsburgh companies finished trading Wednesday with mixed performances. Here is how they wound up:

Allegheny Energy Inc. (NYSE:AYE), up 0.48 percent to $33.19
Allegheny Technologies Inc. (NYSE:ATI), down 4.09 percent to $20.63
American Eagle Outfitters Inc. (NYSE:AEO), up 10.01 percent to $9.34
CONSOL Energy Inc. (NYSE:CNX), down 4.30 percent to $26.03
Dick’s Sporting Goods (NYSE:DKS), up 6.92 percent to $12.98
Federated Investors Inc. (NYSE:FII), up 4.52 percent to $20.35
H.J.Heinz Co. (NYSE:HNZ), up 0.45 percent to $37.58
Koppers Holdings Inc. (NYSE:KOP), up 1.31 percent to $20.17
National City Corp. (NYSE:NCC), up 5.33 percent to $1.78
Nova Chemicals Corp. (NYSE:NCX), down 3.81 percent to $7.06
