Disaster relief available for salmon companies
Portland Business Journal - by Celia Lamb Staff writer
The California Salmon Council is trying to find businesses harmed by the 2008 salmon season closure who might be eligible for federal aid.
Congress has appropriated $170 million for “disaster relief” to fishing communities in California, Oregon and Washington. The collapse of the Sacramento River fall salmon migration led to the fishing shutdown, which the council said has affected commercial fishermen, charter boat operators, Sacramento River guides, fish processors and other salmon-related businesses.
Companies that require a state Department of Fish and Game license to operate have been sent disaster forms, according to a council news release. But businesses that cater to commercial or recreational anglers not regulated by Fish and Game might not be aware of the program.
The application deadline is Dec. 31. To receive aid, businesses must demonstrate that salmon is at least 30 percent of their normal business and they must document losses up to a maximum of $225,000.
