AVI BioPharma files to conduct drug trials

Portland Business Journal

AVI BioPharma Inc. announced Wednesday it has filed applications with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to conduct clinical trials on two RNA-based drugs.

One application is for a drug for the treatment of the Ebola virus. The other is for a drug to treat Marburg virus. In each case, Portland-based AVI (NasdaqGM: AVII) will conduct the trial in collaboration with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases.

AVI said that preclinical results for each drug demonstrated a high rate of survival in nonhuman primates challenged with lethal infections of the respective viruses.
