Ballmer: Microsoft only interested in buying Yahoo search
Sacramento Business Journal
Microsoft Corp. is "very open" to a possible collaboration with Yahoo Inc. on search but is not interested in buying the whole company, chief executive officer Steve Ballmer told shareholders at the software giant's annual meeting Wednesday.
"Let me be clear. We are done with all acquisition discussions with Yahoo," Ballmer said.
His comments come after hopes were raised among some investors that Yahoo would reopen a possible sale to Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) after CEO Jerry Yang stepped down as chief executive. Yang will remain a board member of Sunnyvale-based Yahoo.
Yang had rejected a $33 a share offer worth an estimated $47.5 billion in May as unvervaluing Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO). The company's shares fell about 21 percent after Ballmer's comments to close at $9.14.
