Air ambulance service opens in Hondo

A national air ambulance service is opening a new base of operations in Hondo, about 45 miles west of San Antonio.
Air Evac Lifeteam, based in West Plains, Mo., is one of the largest independently owned air ambulance services in the United States.
The new base will be located at the Hondo Municipal Airport and will serve hospitals and communities within a 70-mile radius.
Air Evac Lifeteam crews include a pilot, registered nurse and paramedic who provide patients with on-the-scene medical attention following an accident or medical emergency and rapid transport to and between medical facilities.
“The opening of this base is part of an ongoing commitment by Air Evac Lifeteam and the health care community in this region to improve access to trauma care for the residents of rural America,” says base manager Sandra Brown. “Our company’s business philosophy is based on the belief that air ambulances should be placed in areas of greatest need — communities that are often far from major trauma centers.”
Air Evac Lifeteam currently has bases in 83 cities across 12 states, including operations in San Marcos, Kerrville and Marble Falls.
