Oracle follows Google into widget world

San Francisco Business Times - by Steven E.F. Brown

Database giant Oracle Corp. released a series of widgets — small software applications — meant to collect and display data on a company’s sales.

Popular widgets from businesses like Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) display data on weather or traffic in an easy format for users to see on their desktops or mobile devices.

Oracle’s slew of widgets, called “CRM Gadgets for Sales,” is meant to do the same with sales data. They’ll collect both proprietary business data and public data from the Internet and combine them in a report salespeople can check even when they’re out of the office.

The set of gadgets will be a free download for Oracle’s customers.

Redwood City-based Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) will offer widgets that track a salesperson’s contacts and sales leads, give data on accounts combined with RSS feed data on market data, remind employees of sales deals that are set to close soon, collect data on sales quotas, and allow searches of the company’s Siebel software.

The new widgets will also help Oracle compete with rival Salesforce.com Inc. (NYSE: CRM), which has similar products.
