Starbucks, Cisco among Fortune's most admired companies

Several companies with Triangle operations - including Starbucks and Cisco Systems - rank among the 20 most admired companies operating in the United States, according to a survey published in Fortune magazine.
The survey, conducted by the Hay Group, asked executives, directors, and analysts to rate Fortune 1,000 and selected foreign companies in their own industry on eight criteria, from investment value to social responsibility. Fortune then published the top companies by category and in an overall top 20.
Apple Computer was No. 1 on the top 20, followed by Berkshire Hathaway, GE, Google and Toyota. Starbucks, which has more than 50 Triangle locations, came in at No. 6 on the list.
Other companies with Raleigh-Durham operations in the top 20 include FedEx, Johnson & Johnson, Target, Southwest Airlines, Costco, UPS, Cisco Systems and Nordstrom.
Among the industry rankings, Martin Marietta Materials was the only locally based company to earn a mention, coming in No. 1 in the building materials and glass category. The only other local company eligible for an honor, based on Fortune's criteria, was Morrisville tobacco distributor Alliance One International. It came in at No. 8 in its industry.
