Eight MN firms named to Forbes small-company list

A restaurant chain led eight Minnesota companies that ranked on Forbes magazine's list of the 200 Best Small Companies.

The magazine, in its Oct. 29 issue, rated companies with revenue between $5 million and $750 million and share prices above $5 as of Oct. 1. Criteria included return on equity, sustained sales and net profit growth over 12-month and five-year periods. (The list excluded banks, utilities and REITs).

Leading Minnesota companies was Buffalo Wild Wings Inc. (Nasdaq: BWLD), the fast-growing restaurant chain. The company ranked No. 27 overall, with sales growth being a strong point.

Also on the Top 200 list were:

  • Rapid-prototyping equipment maker Stratasys Inc. (Nasdaq: SSYS) of Eden Prairie (No. 41);
  • Biotech business Techne Corp. (Nasdaq: TECH) of Minneapolis, No. 89;
  • Rimage Corp. (Nasdaq: RIMG), an Edina maker of DVD publishing systems, No. 93;
  • Surmodics Inc. (Nasdaq: SRDX), Eden Prairie, which makes coatings for the medical device industry, No. 105;
  • Tennant Co. (NYSE: TNC), a maker of floor-maintenance equipment, No. 145;
  • Digi International Inc., (Nasdaq: DGII), Minnetonka, a maker of networking software, No. 152
  • MTS Systems Corp. (Nasdaq: MTSC), Eden Prairie, a product-testing and instrumentation business, No. 176
